Background
Eugene Mountain Rescue, Inc., is a volunteer organization formed
in 1968 in order to provide Lane County with trained volunteer
rescuers for emergencies in mountains or cliffs, or in back country
areas requiring mountaineering proficiency during all seasons of
the year. Our Search and Rescue (SAR) missions involve
lost and/or injured climbers, cross-country skiers, hikers, hunters
or downed aircraft victims.
We are the only Lane County volunteer group that brings this type of expertise
to rescue situations. Therefore, EMR is expected to provide sufficient
training for members so that, as a group, EMR is able to competently take a
leadership role in the safe performance of rescues in difficult terrain and
hostile weather conditions. As a group, we are in charge of acquiring and maintaining search and rescue
equipment for use in such emergencies. In order to demonstrate competence in mountain rescue, we are regularly required
to undergo certification testing. This testing is conducted by the Oregon
Mountain Rescue Council (OMRC) every four years. In April 2002 we passed
our certification unconditionally. EMR is part of a larger network of volunteer groups in the county that provide
search and rescue services. As part of this system, EMR volunteers may
be called upon to assist other search and rescue groups in emergencies that
may not require mountaineering or technical rescue skills. EMR may also
be called upon to assist mountain rescue organizations from other counties
in Oregon, or in other states, if they need additional assistance. In addition to SAR work, EMR volunteers work in the community to promote safety
and safe practices in mountaineering and wilderness situations. To this
end, members may at times be asked to help conduct educational programs for
school, civic or church groups or assist in preparation of publications to
promote wilderness safety.
